Plot

In The Banshees of Inisherin plays at the tail end of the Irish Civil War in 1923. Colm Doherty and Pádraic Súilleabháin are lifelong friends and drinking buddies, found themselves on the fictional Irish isle of Inisherin. Colm, wishing to spend the remainder of his life composing music and doing things for which he will be remembered. He abruptly began ignoring Pádraic, leaving his life destabilised. Pádraic’s attempts to speak to Colm were met with an ultimatum. Every time Pádraic bothered him, Colm would cut off one of his own left fingers with a pair of sheep shears.

The local Garda, Peadar, beat his troubled son Dominic severely. Pádraic and his sister Siobhán took Dominic in for a short time. Peadar insulted Pádraic, who retaliated by making public the fact that he beats his son. Colm put Pádraic back in his wagon and drove him home, and the two did not speak. Pádraic drunkenly confronted Colm in the pub, and Colm remarked that this was the most interesting he had been. The next morning, not remembering what he had said, Pádraic attempted to apologise to Colm. The conversation went badly and Colm cut off one of his fingers and threw it at Pádraic’s door.

Pádraic saw Colm meeting with a fiddler from the mainland, and tricked the fiddler into returning home by lying about his father being hit by a bread van. Local elder Mrs. McCormick warned Pádraic that death would come to the island soon. Pádraic told Dominic about what he did to the fiddler, and Dominic said that Pádraic was no longer nice. Pádraic became convinced that this would make him interesting enough for Colm. He visited Colm to reprimand him for behaving so badly. Colm revealed that he had finished composing his song, and the two appeared to be on the point of reconciling.

Siobhán moved to the mainland for a job in a library. Pádraic came home to find his pet donkey Jenny had choked on one of Colm’s fingers and died. He confronted Colm and warned him he would burn his house down, regardless of whether Colm was in it.
